RadiATe is an online exhibit space and forum dedicated to the convergence of fine art and science. RadiATe uses technology and design to promote and exhibit the multi-disciplinary work of a gourp of international artists called RadiATE. This site has been completely redesigned in 2003: it is now enclosed in an innovative, and intuitive Flash wrapper. The site in its entirety was designed and executed by founder Aliyah Marr who teaches interactive and motion design at major art and design institutions, including Parsons School of Design, The School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute in New York City. The site itself is an interactive art experience. There are four main sections in the site: Exhibits, Artist's Salon, Open Studio, and Contact. The Exhibits gallery space is dedicated to showing or documenting interactive, multimedia work: anything that involved modern technological savvy to complete, or requires technology to view — Flash or Director movies, digitally mastered indie films or music, new forms of interactive literature, or simply novel uses of web technology. New exhibits are mounted as they are available: the current exhibit is initially shown on the Exhibit space, with former exhibits archived in the small line buttons on the far left. It is important to note that certain exhibits have been password protected, if they are of a sensitive nature and not appropriate for general publication. The password is given only to interested parties and to those on RadiATe's mailing list of curators and patrons, but the rest of the site is open to the public. Most of these private exhibits would be shown in a regular gallery setting, but not otherwise publicized. The Artist's Salon invites the participation of artist's and patrons; this section's primary purpose is to publicize and promote, and sell work. Using standard commercial tools such as free ecards, and site registration, the site tracks users and promotes RadiATe. The idea of this feature is to allow the images from RadiATe be circulated on the internet, thereby increasing eachartist's visibility and RadiATe's name brand. Open Studio invites the user to act as a Guest Curator and make their own exhibit. The purpose of this section of the site is to encourage curators to get acquainted with the artist's work by allowing them to choose and arrange her artwork first in a virtual environment; a kind of dry curatorial run. The work is stored in this section like paintings on edge. The yellow lines at the bottom of the screen each represent a painting or or other flat art work. As the user rolls his mouse over the line, the work turns and the image is revealed. Clicking on the piece brings it into the gallery space above, where the user can arrange the work as in an exhibition, enlarge it, reduce it or trash it. The program keeps a list of the user's choices at the bottom of the screen. When the exhibit is finally chosen, the user can choose to email his choices to RadiATe or to anyone else, by clicking on the email button at the bottom. The Contact section contains press releases and general information. ----- Radi8 invites curators, editors, program directors, and educators to inquire about any work exhibited here for the purpose of exhibition, education or publication. This site is open to new ideas and interesting collaborations. Background Noise Radi8 was conceived in August 1999 at the TechnOasis Gallery at the Siggraph 99 Trade Show, where the artist, Aliyah Marr was invited to exhibit her interactive piece, The Book of Hours. Shows like Siggraph are very inspiring for multimedia artists, allowing for the free exchange of knowledge and ideas between peers, but they have some disadvantages: __ the show is mostly commercial Radi8 attempts to resolve these problems by allowing instant publishing of artwork; in the form of papers, proposals, or online demos. The exhibits are currently the work of Radi8's founder, Aliyah Marr. The site is primarily intended to document and promote her work. Radi8 was finally launched in April of 2001. By the middle of May the site had already gone through two revisions, and mounted four exhibits. As the site evolves, the founder hopes to involve her peers. Radi8 invites curators, editors, program directors, and educators to inquire about any work exhibited here for the purpose of exhibition, education or publication. This site is open to new ideas and interesting collaborations. Represented by MIWAA MIdtown West Artists Alliance Her work may be found in the following slide registries:
